The sides of a piece of
knitting are also known as the selvedges.
Special care must be taken while you
are working to ensure that these are
kept straight.

Stocking stitch
edge
This is the most common edge and
the first and last stitches must
be firmly made. All knit row stitches
are knitted and all purl row stitches
are purled.
|

|
|
Open Edge
To produce this
more decorative edge slip the
first and last stitches of every
knit row knitwise. Purl all the
edge stitches in the purl row.

Slip stitch
edge
This is especially
useful as a neat edge on cardigans.
"Pips" are formed in
a regular sequence which look
neat and make row counting easier
- each "pip" counts
for two rows. Slip the first stitch
of each row knitwise then knit
the last stitch of each row.
